A Chat with… Deane (Gym Manager)

Deane has been working in the fitness industry for over 12 years now which has allowed him to gain a wide range of knowledge as a strength and conditioning coach. He managers the gym at Botanica and run classes and PT sessions to members of the building. Having only joined Botanica last year, he has made a big impression with the Botanica team and the gym goers alike. Organising events and incentives for the gym, he has made the space his own and is a pleasure to have around Botanica.

Tell us a bit about your role.

I am the gym manager and programme manager for the gym at Botanica ran by Nuffield Health. This means I take care of the gym equipment, design classes and run PT sessions. Since I started here too, I started the Thursday run club that takes place during the warmer months. It’s a fun job that allows me to connect with a variety of people each day. Some days it’s quiet and others it’s full on but I love sport and fitness so for me it’s a great job. Being in this industry will always be a rewarding experience. It allows you to help people from all walks of life no matter what their goals/aspirations might be.

What is the best piece of advice you have ever received?

“Nothing great happens within your comfort zone”.

Since you work at the gym, what’s your favourite thing to do?

Definitely a combination of strength training and cardio. Some weeks I prefer cardio, some weeks I prefer strength training. The beauty of the fitness industry is there is something for everyone to enjoy. How did you get into what you’re doing now?

Why did you choose fitness?

Staying healthy and helping my community have always been big passions of mine. So being able to help people live healthy lifestyles whilst working in the fitness industry is a no brainer for me.

If you could have dinner with any three people (living or dead) who would they be and why?

Dave Chapelle, in my opinion he’s the greatest comedian ever. Nelson Mandela, truly inspirational what he went through to influence change. And Maya Angelou, her ability to paint a picture with words is incredible.

What has been your proudest achievement so far either in life or at work?

Being able to play my sport at a professional level which has helped aid my journey.
